chelseabott asked:

What is it called when someone makes a mental illness as something to be feared; something disgusting and/or evil?? I'm reading a book and can't put a name on it--I need it to write a dialect report. Thanks!! Btw I LOVE your blog!!! So fascinating!!

sixpenceee answered:

It’s called ableism and here is an interesting discussion on it, and here’s an article on it

It should be stopped. We can have scary without degrading others. Thank you to the people who brought it to my attention.

Disability activists abandon their wheelchairs and mobility devices and crawl up the 83 stone steps of the U.S. Capitol Building demanding the passage of the American with Disability Act, March 12, 1990.

A south Korean man cries as his brother is on a train back to North Korea. Separated by the war, they have not seen the other since 1950. They were allowed to see each other for three days, but one will go back spending life in luxury, and the other in hard labour

The Mocambo night club in East Hollywood, a white’s only club, was the most popular dance spot around but would not book Ella because she was black. Marilyn, who adored Ella Fitzgerald and her music, called the manager and demanded that they book Ella immediately

Until the mid-60s, the Aboriginals came under the Flora And Fauna Act, which classified them as animals, not human beings. This also meant that killing an Aboriginal meant you weren’t killing a human being, but an animal.

I hope you guys learned and teared up from this as much as I did.

WHEN COUPLES START TO LOOK ALIKE
University of Michigan psychologist Robert Zajonc analyzed photographs of couples taken when they were newlyweds and photographs of the same couples taken 25 years later.
The results showed that the couples had grown to look more like each other over time. The happier the couple said they were, the more likely they were to have increased in their physical similarity.
Zajonc suggested that older couples looked more alike because people in close contact mimic each other’s facial expressions. In other words, if your partner has laughs a lot, he or she will probably develop laugh lines around their mouth — and so will you.
Other evidence has also shown that men and women may be initially attracted to partners with similar personalities.
It turns out we may even be hard-wired to fall in love with people who have similar DNA. In a study of twins, University of Western Ontario scientists found that not only did participants tend to pick partners with similar genes; the spouses of the identical twins were also more alike than the spouses of non-identical twins.

Couples may start to look like each other because in some ways they already are like each other.

I mentioned this is the iconic images compilation post but let me just rant for a little bit.
This is a portrait of Istvan Reiner, taken shortly before he was killed in Auschwitz. Look at him. Look how ridiculously happy he looks. He’s playing with a card and hole puncher. He’s maybe 6 or 7 years old. I wonder about all the birthday’s and birthday present he missed out on. I wonder about all the best friends he might have made or about the tears that would have streaked down his face the first time he had his heart broken. I wonder about his future career, or how he would’ve proposed to his life-partner. I wonder if he’d grow up to be a doctor or a carpenter or an engineer. I wonder about how those same big, dark eyes would swell up with joy at the site of his very own child.
I wonder how someone can be so outright despicable as to pack him into a gas chamber and take away all of that.

Chimps React to Death
The above gif shows a group of chimps surrounding the dead body of a 9 year old chimp that died from pneumonia. They’ve grouped together in a way scientists haven’t seen before. The chimps are seeing gently touching the body, smelling and observing.

Another interesting event that happened would be how a female chimp would smack the dead body and run away. The other chimps would observe the body very closely after that event.

Although many articles on the internet will use this as an example of chimps mourning death, researchers aren’t exactly sure of how they feel inside.
